CHRIS:  On April 23rd, 1982, Key West, Florida seceded from the US - for one whole minute.  The citizens and mayor had been protesting a roadblock and checkpoint established by border patrol between Miami and the Keys, as this was hurting tourism. When their complaints were ignored by the feds, Mayor Dennis Wardlow declared Key West independent and declared the tiny nation The Conch Republic.  Per Wikipedia:  “As part of the protest, Mayor Wardlow was proclaimed Prime Minister of the Republic, which immediately declared war against the United States (symbolically breaking a loaf of stale Cuban bread over the head of a man dressed in a naval uniform), quickly surrendered after one minute (to the man in the uniform), and applied for one billion dollars in foreign aid.”  This publicity stunt actually worked, as the roadblock was soon removed and tourism to the Keys increased!

CHRIS:  With a population of 542, Prairie Du Rocher, Illinois - a tiny village one hour south of St. Louis, Missouri - was founded in 1722 by French colonists whose descendants keep French traditions alive.  For example, La Guiannée is a custom that dates back to Medieval Times and is celebrated every New Year’s Eve.  In fact, 2022 will mark its 300th anniversary!  Men and women dress in period costumes and go from house to house, singing and entertaining the hosts, and asking for food and drink in return.  Originally it was a way for the poor to be able to ask for food and gratuities from the rich during the wintertime.  Generosity from the hosts is expected to bring them good fortune in the year ahead.

NANCY:  So I thought I’d share some things that are illegal in Texas, in case you were visiting and had any inclinations towards any of the following:
It is illegal to put graffiti on someone else’s cow.
In Houston, it is illegal to sell Limburger cheese on Sunday.  Apparently it has a strong smell?
Similar to Georgia, it is illegal to curse in front of, or indecently expose, a corpse.
It is illegal to spit on the sidewalk.  That should be everywhere, IMHO.
It is illegal to shoot a buffalo from the second story of a hotel.  How about from the first?
In Lefors, which is 65 miles east of Amarillo, it is illegal to take more than three swallows of beer at any time while standing. Who is monitoring this?
In Mesquite, it’s illegal for children to have unusual haircuts. Hmm what do they consider unusual?  I might have broken the law with some of my doozies.
And finally, throughout the state, it is illegal to milk another person’s cow.

CHRIS:  In colonial Virginia, voters could be bribed by candidates offering free food and beer!  Apparently, a young George Washington didn’t get the memo, and was creamed in 1755 when he ran for a seat in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Three years later, he tried again, this time plowing his future constituents with, quote: nearly 47 gallons of beer, more than 70 gallons of rum punch, about 34½ gallons of wine, 2 gallons of cider, and 3½ pints of brandy. End quote.  He won by a landslide.

NANCY: And for our last bit of trivia, from the great namesake state of Washington, which is at the center of a huge controversy involving the invention of THE WAVE.  Yes, the ubiquitous crowd phenomenon done at sporting events.  American cheerleader Krazy George Henderson, whose heyday was the 1970s and 80s, claimed to have invented it. Then, on October 15, 1981, he was videotaped leading the wave at a major league baseball game in Oakland.  Finally, proof! But two weeks later, on Halloween, the University of Washington was playing a football game against Stanford at Husky Stadium in Seattle, and the wave broke out!  The cheer became a staple at every game afterwards.  The fans were generous.  They gave Henderson credit for leading the previous wave in Oakland, but insisted that THEY popularized it.
