NANCY:   Whether you asked for a job transition or not, searching for a new position can be scary, frustrating and disheartening.  Times and technologies change quickly, and there’s a lot to organize!  But the journey can just as easily be exciting, fruitful and rewarding.  I’m Nancy Pinto.

CHRIS:  And I’m Chris Pinto.  Together we own Pinto Employment Search, an executive recruiting firm specializing in the supply chain and logistics industry.  Our combined experience in transportation jobs and recruiting is over 50 years!  We’re here to help you navigate the world of resume writing, job applications, interviews, negotiating compensation, and everything in between - to help you land the job you want!

Once a week, we will also release an episode where we announce current job openings we’re working on.

NANCY:  Welcome to the first episode of the Job Search SOS Podcast!  We’re so excited to share all our experiences with you, and hopefully bring some guidance, peace and sanity to the world of job searching!  Today we wanna give you a brief overview of some of the topics we’re going to cover on our show.  We will dive deeper into each topic in future episodes.

CHRIS:  Perhaps you’re ready to make a career change.  Or maybe you had no choice in the matter because of the economy, budget cuts, COVID, and so on.   Whatever the reason, you’ve found yourself needing a new job.  This can understandably feel daunting and unsettling.  In short, it can really suck.

NANCY:  The VERY FIRST thing to do is to get in the right mindset.  Go ahead and process your feelings of anger, frustration, sadness, regret - whatever it is, it’s okay to feel those things.  We’re emotional human beings.  And then we need to collect ourselves, get our attitudes, thoughts, and efforts focused on the positive so that they can guide us properly in the right direction.

CHRIS: This means literally telling yourself that you are in control of your thoughts and actions, and approaching each step with a positive attitude.  This will have a domino effect for all your interactions and transactions, and you’ll generally feel happier regardless of the circumstances.  You might want to reach out to a few loved ones or even a therapist or counselor for support.

NANCY:  You need to know that during your search, you’ll encounter wonderful companies and caring people, but you might also be ghosted or passed on when you thought you nailed it.  You can do everything right, interview 4 times with the same company, and still not get the job.  It’s very important to know that as long as you did your best, it wasn’t you.  There was just a better fit for them at this time, and there will be a better fit for you too!

CHRIS:  So with a clear head, the first thing you want to do is create or update your resume.   Formats change with the times, so you may need to do some research as to what’s in style.  What never changes, though, is good grammar and a nice, neat, concise presentation.

Then, you’ll need to figure out where you’re going to present your polished, spell-checked,  updated resume.  It’s never been easier to introduce yourself and get your credentials and career goals in front of recruiters and hiring managers, whether or not they’re even actually advertising a job opening!

NANCY:  It might feel awkward to reach out to strangers if you’ve never been in this position - and especially if, like me, you’re an introvert!  But with preparation, practice, and a positive mindset, it will get easier.  When I was starting out in recruiting, I was super intimidated to talk to people, whether they be clients or job applicants.  But see, here’s the thing.  Everyone wants you to succeed.  The hiring manager and recruiter want YOU to be THE ONE, because when a good match is made, all sides win.

CHRIS: With a little bit of work up front, you can set yourself up for a smooth and successful job search and interview process.  One of the things you will want to do is write down your key accomplishments and skills, especially how they fit in with the companies and roles you’re targeting.  Include these as major bullet points on your resume or cover letter, and be ready to elaborate when asked in an interview.

NANCY:  Another thing you’ll wanna do is a little bit of research on the company and roles you’re targeting.  You don’t need to know every last detail, but get a feel for the organization and the position, and answer the question, why do I want to work here.  So that when you’re ready to reach out to someone “out of the blue,” you’ll have a personalized introduction that will tell them you’re serious and not sending the same message to a thousand other people.

When you finally get that interview, you’ll go more in-depth on preparation, maybe even rehearsing and role playing with someone you trust.

CHRIS:  With all that, you might still get blindsided by a question from outer space, or suddenly there are 10 other people sitting in on the Zoom interview with you.  This process isn’t “one-size-fits-all.”   You gotta be ready to roll with the punches!  Again, getting into the daily habit of establishing a proper mindset from the get-go is really important so that you can deal with the unforeseen situations that may come up.

NANCY:  As the pandemic has taught us, we can be dealt a colossal blow at any time. Whatever your circumstances, it’s always a good idea to create the attitude in yourself that you can handle anything that comes your way.  And that will help you not only in a job search, but in life in general.

CHRIS: In FUTURE episodes, we will break down all the different aspects of the job search, from creating a resume to your first day and beyond.  For our NEXT episode, we’ll show you how to craft a simple, effective resume that will make it past an Applicant Tracking System or human gatekeeper, and into the excited hands of a hiring manager.   If you have any specific questions, we would love to hear them!

NANCY:  We’ll also drop a weekly episode to announce the hottest logistics jobs we’re working on.  Our website and contact info will be in the show notes of every podcast episode, so please feel free to share with anyone you know, and reach out with comments, questions, or just to say hello!
