NANCY: Welcome to the Job Search SOS podcast! I’m Nancy Pinto.

CHRIS: And I’m Chris Pinto. Together, we are Pinto Employment Search, a recruiting company specializing in the logistics and supply chain industry.  You can find us online at pintoemployment.com, on LinkedIn and Facebook at Pinto Employment Search LLC, and Instagram at logisticsjobsusa. We’ll link to all those in the show notes. Please connect with us!

NANCY: OK, we’ve got new trivia and updated jobs here.
As usual, Chris didn’t read any of this beforehand!

ARIZONA:
Looking for the world’s largest rose bush/tree? You’ll find it in the desert, Tombstone, Arizona to be exact. The roots for the tree were sent from Scotland in 1885, from a friend to a homesick immigrant. It has since grown to 9000 square feet, and its trunk is 14 feet in diameter.  It blooms in March and April.

JOBS:
Scottsdale - Human Resources Associate - Logistics Company
Scottsdale - Information Technology / EDI Specialist

CALIFORNIA:
About 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles you will find Port Hueneme (why-KNEE-me), used by a lot of agricultural exporters for international ocean freight transportation. Within the breakwater, you will find part of the remains of an old passenger vessel, last named La Jennelle. The ship came to life in 1930, and carried travelers between New York, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. During WWII, she was pressed into service, and afterwards changed ownership and names several times before landing at Port Hueneme in 1970. There, a fierce storm caused her to list and take on water.  She was wrecked and became an attraction for divers and souvenir seekers. After someone fell and died, the Navy cut off the top of the ship and filled the body with rocks, thus making it part of the port’s breakwater.

FLORIDA:
If you wish to snorkel or scuba dive in a stunning underground river located inside a 10,000 year old cave, look no further than Devil’s Den in Williston, FL, which is two hours north of Orlando. Don’t let the name scare you. It was so named by early settlers because of what they thought was smoke that came from the cave. It wasn’t smoke, it was steam coming off the water.  You get into the water by going down a steep staircase, then you may snorkel or scuba - no free swimming allowed.  The view that greets you is gorgeous blue-green water that stays at 72 degrees year-round.  If you scuba dive, you might even see 2-million-year-old fossils!

JOBS:
Miami - Sales Manager - Ocean Carrier
Tampa - Sales Representative, International Cargo

GEORGIA:
There are certain places in the US that look and feel like you’re in Europe. The mountain town of Helen, Georgia is one such place. It’s in the middle of nowhere, about 90 minutes north of Athens. It looks and feels like Bavaria, with those Swiss Miss-looking buildings. They celebrate Oktoberfest, and you can visit the Christmas Shoppe, the Alpine Festival of Craft and Arts and Hansel and Gretel’s Chocolate shop.

JOBS:
Atlanta - Sales Manager - Ocean Carrier
Atlanta - Sales Representative, International Cargo
Savannah - Sales Manager - Ocean Carrier

ILLINOIS:
Downtown Chicago.  Millennium Park. An art installation called Cloud Gate, also known as The Bean, because it looks like a giant bean. It beautifully reflects the skyline and the clouds above. It was designed by Indian-British artist Anish Kapoor and was his first public outdoor art installation in the US.  By the numbers: It is made of 168 steel plates that were welded together to look like one seamless giant piece.  It weighs 110 tons. It measures 66-feet long by 33-feet high, with a 12 foot high arch that visitors can walk under. Since we’re in the logistics industry, it might also interest you to know that the builders quote: “took inspiration from the methods used in the shipbuilding industry. The Bean’s interior contains a wooden structure that allows the sculpture to expand and contract in response to the weather changes without collapsing.”  End quote. You can take some incredible photos day or night.  It’s become quite the attraction!

JOBS:
Chicago - Business Development Manager - Midwest (Ocean Carrier)
Chicago - Sales Executive - Domestic and International - Freight Forwarder

LOUISIANA:
On Bourbon Street in New Orleans, you’ll find the historic, iconic bar called Old Absinthe House. This establishment started out in 1807 as an importing and bartering store. At some point one of its floors was turned into a saloon. It was here that Andrew Jackson recruited pirate Jean Lafitte to help him defeat the British in the War of 1812.  A century later, during Prohibition, plans were made to destroy the bar as a symbol of the end of alcohol in the United States. But those in the know secretly moved the bar to a new location down the street. After Prohibition was over, it was moved back to its original location, and to this day continues to serve up cocktails - including absinthe - 7 days a week.

JOBS:
Sales Executive - Domestic or International Freight - Freight Forwarder

MARYLAND:
For a fascinating learning experience, visit the NASA Goddard Visitor Center, just 30 minutes from Baltimore. It’s completely free.Check out their many diverse exhibitions and artifacts.  Learn how space telescopes work. Take photos of rockets in the Rocket Garden.  Post them on Instagram and look brilliant.

JOBS:
Pikesville - Export Customer Service Rep (NVOCC)
Baltimore - Sales Representative - International Cargo - Freight Forwarder
Baltimore - Sales Representative - International and Domestic Freight

MASSACHUSETTS:
This is either related to our Maryland trivia, or a colossal coincidence. In Auburn, near Worcester, you can see a model Polaris Ballistic Missile, designed by Robert H. Goddard. The real one was the very first liquid-fueled rocket, and he launched it from his Aunt’s Effie’s farm on March 16, 1926. The rocket reached an altitude of 41 feet, lasted 2 seconds and averaged about 60 miles per hour. The Rotary Club of Auburn established Goddard Memorial Park and erected a monument in honor of Goddard.

JOBS:
Boston - Sales Representative - International Cargo - Freight Forwarder

NEW JERSEY:
We’re going to Tuckerton!! In south Jersey (90 miles south of Newark Airport), along the coast, in the area locals call “Down the Shore,” you will find a quaint little 40-acre village called Tuckerton Seaport. Opened in May of 2000, Tuckerton Seaport was designed as a cultural center and museum where people could learn about the lifestyle, work and traditions unique to the area; things like crabbing and duck decoy making. There’s a lot to do, including hiking, arts and crafts, ferry rides, visiting the lighthouse, and feeding farm animals. There are 17 historic and recreated buildings connected by a boardwalk, a maritime forest and a wetlands nature trail. There’s lots to explore for people of any age!

NEW YORK:
When one thinks of New York, one might automatically think “crowded.”  But Dering Harbor, located way out on the far end of Long Island, almost 100 miles from JFK airport, boasts a population of 50 persons (as of 2020). Only 10 years prior, their population was 11, so clearly there was a huge boom. Of course there’s stuff to do in the area, waterfront type of stuff like boating and beaches, lots of restaurants, and community events like live music.

 JOBS:
Inwood - Ocean Export Operations Coordinator
Jamaica - LCL/Consolidation Sales - NVOCC
Jamaica - Licensed Customs Broker
Lawrence - Ocean Operations Team Leader

NORTH CAROLINA:
Twenty miles north of Charlotte, in Cornelius, you will find Ass Clown Brewing Company! They’ve got 31 rotating taps and over 200 beers!  Check out some of the offerings:  Chocolate Dipped Candy Cane Stout; Go Reap Yourself (Pale Ale), and of course, the Ass Clown IPA.

JOBS:
Charlotte - Sales Representative - International Cargo - Freight Forwarder

PENNSYLVANIA:
In honor of the start of baseball season, and because my wife is working on a podcast episode about Roberto Clemente for her other show, BoricuameRican, we’ll recommend a trip to PNC Park to see the Pittsburgh Pirates (or a concert or other event if baseball isn’t your thing). The stadium sits along the Allegheny River with a view of the skyline and Roberto Clemente Bridge (formerly 6th Street Bridge). Normally you can walk across the bridge to the ballpark but it’s temporarily closed for maintenance and repairs. There are other things to see and do in and around the ballpark, including statues, plaques and other tributes to ballplayers, as well as bars and restaurants, and plenty of beautiful scenery for photo taking.  Worth it for the history and the atmosphere!

JOBS:
Harrisburg (or York or Lancaster) - Sales Representative, International and Domestic Freight

SOUTH CAROLINA:
In Bishopville, SC you will find the quirky Button Museum, opened by a gentleman named Dalton Stevens, who suffered from severe insomnia. The story starts in 1983. To occupy his time, Dalton started sewing buttons on his suits. This led to him sewing buttons onto anything he could get his hands on: guitars, hats, furniture. Eventually he had to rent a building nearby to house his increasing collection, which includes an outhouse, caskets and a hearse! The Button King, as he came to be lovingly known, finally got some sleep when he passed away in 2016 at the age of 86.

JOBS:
Charleston - Sales Manager - Ocean Carrier
Charleston -  Sales Representative, International Cargo

TEXAS:
Who knew that Texas is a major producer of quality wine? Texas Hill Country, which goes from north of San Antonio to west of Austin, measures 9 million acres and is the 2nd largest wine producing region in the United States. The climate is conducive to producing an excellent Cabernet, Zinfandel or Merlot. You can visit over 50 wineries, and attend wine-and-food pairing dinners or grape-stomping events.

JOBS:
Sales Executive - Domestic or International Freight - Freight Forwarder

VIRGINIA/DC:
In the 1890s, Dr. Charles Browne Fleet, a resident of Lynchburg, VA, invented ChapStick.

JOBS:
Alexandria - International Operations Specialist
Norfolk - Sales Representative - International Cargo - Freight Forwarder

WASHINGTON:
We are not cat people (nothing against them, we just don’t have anything alive that we need to take care of) but my wife here just wanted me to say “Seattle Meowtropolitan Cat Café”. This is basically a cafe in Seattle where you can get a coffee and hang out among cats. There are 10-15 cats lounging all around the cafe at any given time, and if you fall in love with one you can adopt him or her. You must make reservations because there can only be a maximum of ten customers at any time, otherwise the cats get overstimulated and go a little crazy. So, once you’re confirmed, make yourself comfortable and order a “catpuccino.”

JOBS:
Seattle -Business Development Manager - Ocean Carrier
Seattle - Refrigerated Cargo Sales Manager - Ocean Carrier
